GO ranks are one of the biggest badges of honor for dedicated competitive players. But despite the intense focus on these little badges as status symbols, Valve hasn’t been too transparent about how ranks are subdivided, or what causes a player to rank up or down. To help you understand this system better, we’ve collected the best-available information from Valve and a variety of other sources. GO ranks work To earn your initial rank, you’ll have to win 10 placement matches, at a limit of two per day. Note that an unranked player will be unable to queue with anyone of rank Master Guardian 2 or higher, unless queuing with a full team of five. Based on successes and failures, your rank will be adjusted at the end of each match, assigning you a higher or lower Skill Group if necessary. The mechanics behind this are still unclear, but the surest way to improve is by winning as a team. Play no matches for a month and your Skill Group will disappear, requiring a win or draw to return it. Rank distribution CSGOSquad , an independent analysis website provides a breakdown of the rank distribution, showing the percentage of active players in each rank over a day, week or month. This data is collected through randomly sampled matches, so extending the catchment period to a month gives a good idea of how the ranks spread out.

Elo rating system
There are several theories around but the exact method that Valve uses to determine the ranking is still unknown. The system has been put in place so that higher skill group matches up with their level, and the lower skill group matches with their own. There are a few theories around such which affect your elo such as better aim, better spray pattern, impact frags, bomb defuse, bomb plants etc.
There are also some people who say that if you 1v3, or 1v4 that actually boosts your elo by a lot, but all of these are theories and the real algorithm used by valve is secret. The rank is unlocked after you have played 10 competitive matches on Valve Matchmaking service. Full list of ranks shown below.

Concept art via Bungie When Bungie started to work on Destiny back in , it faced a big challenge. How do you build a game that blurs the line between singleplayer and multiplayer, where players can meet others simply by hitting “play Destiny,” without any traditional matchmaking and lobbies? It’s an enormously complicated problem, and Bungie solved it—but the solution came with its own share of problems. In this article, you’ll learn how Bungie accomplished its goal of a seamless online world, and why its netcode requires more upload bandwidth than most games, opens some players to DDOS attacks, and leads to hit registration that can feel different for every player you face in the Crucible.

Comment below rating threshold, click here to show it. This explanation is current as of the patch going out late in the week of Sept 15th wed, thurs or fri Summary: The system guesses how good you are based on who you beat and who you lose to. It knows pre-made teams are an advantage, so it gives you tougher opponents when you are in a pre-made team. We did fancy math to make the pre-made teams vs solo players matching fair. I even ran it by two math Ph. Ds and they said it made sense!
The basic concept is that the system over time understands how strong of a player you are, and attempts to place you in games with people of the same strength. As much as possible, the game tries to create matches that are a coin flip between players who are about the same skill. The basic priorities of the system are in order: The longer you wait, the less important priorities 1 and 2 are. How are matches made?
If you are in a pre-made team, your rating is the average of you and your team members, along with an increase based on the type of pre-made you are to make sure that you get tougher opponents, because being a pre-made is an advantage. This bonus is calculated from a bunch of research we did on hundreds of thousands of game results to figure out how much of an advantage being in a team is.
